Grow Your Tenner!

Grow Your Tenner!

Dear friends

We are delighted to be part of this wonderful campaign that literally doubles donations made via the LocalGiving “Grow Your Tenner” programme.

Since 2012 the “Grow Your Tenner” campaign has raised over £6 million for local charities and community groups and in 2016 Grow Your Tenner raised over £1 million for more than 1,300 LocalGiving members.

Simply, for every donation of £10 we receive, the Grow Your Tenner fund doubles that donation to £20 and there is also an option for Gift Aid that would increase the donation further to £22.50. (Donations can be made up to £30 via the site, although only £10 of this is doubled.)

As you may be aware, the Hope Centre Manchester is run entirely by volunteers who give their time and support of its many of its events.

All funds we raise will enable us to continue to support local projects, such as young offenders, carers and local families for whom previous funding is no longer available.

If you can support the work of the Hope Centre in the local community, please visit our Grow Your Tenner webpage at: https://localgiving.org/charity/lightofhope/ and make your donation.

For further information about LocalGiving, please see their website at
https://localgiving.org/what-we-do/campaigns/grow-your-tenner

The event opens on 17th October at 10am and runs until 16th November or until the funding runs out – we would really appreciate your support for our work.

Meditation for Colin Hughes

Meditation for Colin
As you may know Colin Hughes passed away last Saturday (peacefully at his sisters in Northumbria). His funeral is on 12th August at 2.30pm at Durham Crematorium.

For those unable to make the journey but who may wish to remember Colin, we are
having a meditation at the Hope Centre in his memory and to be of joy in celebration of a lovely guy who helped so many and brought a smile to so many faces.

You may not even know Colin’s second name! He came regularly to Meditation and introduced many of his friends and colleagues. He was often sporting a funny T shirt, Loud waistcoat, Bright/Jokey socks and always blessed us with his droll sense of humour. He was a great support and inspiration to many struggling and recovering from their difficulties.

If you wish to come to mediate with us please let me know (no need to book but it will help with catering if we know vague numbers).

PLEASE forward this information to anyone you know who may be interested to come and join in spirit with Colin’s friends and family up in the North East. Please also feel free to use your Social media to let Colin’s many friends know that we will be remembering him on 12 August.

Introduction to Astrology Workshop

 Astrology Symbols

Introduction to Astrology Workshop with Janet Robinson

Saturday 18th April 2015 – 10am to 4pm

  • What is Astrology?
  • Basic Astrology
  • How a birth chart is constructed
  • Who am I? How to interpret your chart

Everyone who attends will receive their own personal birth chart.

Astrology consists of several systems of divination based on the premise that there is a relationship between astronomical phenomena and events in the human world. Many cultures have attached importance to astronomical events, and the Indians, Chinese, and Mayans developed elaborate systems for predicting terrestrial events from celestial observations. In the West, astrology most often consists of a system of horoscopes purporting to explain aspects of a person’s personality and predict future events in their life based on the positions of the sun, moon, and other celestial objects at the time of their birth.

Throughout most of its history, astrology was considered a scholarly tradition. It was accepted in political and academic contexts, and was connected with other studies, such as astronomy, alchemy, meteorology, and medicine.

Astrology has been dated to at least the 2nd millennium BCE, with roots in calendrical systems used to predict seasonal shifts and to interpret celestial cycles as signs of divine communications. A form of astrology was practised in the first dynasty of Mesopotamia (1950–1651 BCE). Chinese astrology was elaborated in the Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BCE). Hellenistic astrology after 332 BCE mixed Babylonian astrology with Egyptian Decanic astrology in Alexandria, creating horoscopic astrology. Alexander the Great’s conquest of Asia allowed astrology to spread to Ancient Greece and Rome. In Rome, astrology was associated with “Chaldean wisdom”. After the conquest of Alexandria in the 7th century, astrology was taken up by Islamic scholars, and Hellenistic texts were translated into Arabic and Persian. In the 12th century, Arabic texts were imported to Europe and translated into Latin, helping to initiate the European Renaissance.
